Old Overton Club recently reopened for play following a three month golf course renovation project. Jerry Pate Design oversaw the renovation work while Southeast Golf Inc. golf course construction company was the contractor. The project launched in mid-June and was completed in early September.
The original 18-hole Jerry Pate and Tom Fazio-designed golf course opened for play in 1993, and aside from routine maintenance, the course has remained unchanged. Renovation work was focused on three areas: greens, bunkers and tee boxes. All 18 greens, as well as the practice green, were rebuilt and resurfaced with TifEagle Bermuda grass to provide members with a smoother, faster and more consistent putting surface.
All course bunkers were rebuilt using the Better Billy BunkerTM method which provides a technically advanced drainage and liner system, while providing optimal playing conditions much deeper into the life of the bunker. Tee boxes were also leveled and re-grassed using TifGrand Bermuda. In addition, crews began the process of creating “natural areas” throughout the course to enhance the visual appeal.
“It has been a long and exciting three months for the Old Overton agronomy team,” said Old Overton Club’s Director of Agronomy Bruce Hospes. “The timeline for all of the changes was very aggressive, but the end result is fantastic. The golf course looks and plays incredible.”
The par-71, 7,200-yard course is located in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham, and is considered by Golf Digest and Golfweek to be one of the top five golf courses in the state.
Managed by Troon Privé, the private club division of Troon, the Old Overton Club also features a 25,000 square-foot clubhouse with both fine and casual dining options as well as event space for member gatherings. The Tennis Pavilion at Old Overton is home to seven Hydrocourts (soft) and two hard courts. The club’s outdoor pool complex features a six lane competitive pool, with shallow areas for younger swimmers, a separate toddler pool, and locker room facilities. The pool grill and porch areas provide members with a relaxing place to enjoy meals and mingle.
