Southern Coast Cup Kicking Off

Modern sports are all about the buildup, prolonging the magic. Fans are glued to basketball in March or football throughout December. One game, one day, does not make a season. The 2019 High School Cup brings that same train of thought to high school soccer, and the 2019 Southern Coast Cup, held at Foley Sports Tourism (FST) April 4 – 7, is a big stop along the way.

The High School Cup is a series of tournaments held throughout the nation corresponding to the Topdrawersoccer.com regions. The High School Cup is awarded to the team ranked highest in the Topdrawersoccer.com Fab 50 standings that also competed in either the Smoky Mountain Cup or Southern Coast Cup.

Southern Coast Cup Director Van Harper said 64 teams from as far as Oklahoma and Tennessee will compete. The 2019 event will consist of competition for boys and girls varsity and junior varsity divisions. This is the second year Foley has hosted the tournament, and Harper explained they chose to make FST the permanent home of the Southern Coast Cup because of the growth experienced.

“Our overall spring tournament series has grown from last year when we hosted 170 high schools between our 3 events,” Harper said. “We are thrilled to return to the Foley Sports Tourism Complex for the 2019 Southern Coast Cup, and plan to host one of the nation’s premier high school tournaments here for many years to come.”

Foley’s Director of Sports Tourism and Recreation, David Thompson, said the partnership with the High School Cup will benefit Foley for years to come.

“This tournament is something teams will put on the calendar each year in their quest to win the High School Cup. With soccer being one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. this competition is set to grow with it,” Thompson said. “Just like football in December, or basketball in March, we want high school soccer teams to think Foley in April.”

The 2019 Southern Coast Cup presented by Adidas is open to the public.  There is a $10 admission charge for a day pass or $15 for a weekend pass. Children ages 5 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate, through the GoFan app, or at gofan.co/HighSchoolCup.
