Jul 25, 2024
USRowing is pleased to share that Beach Sprint Rowing will be added to the program for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, according to the IOC.
Contested in a run-row-run combination over a 250-meter, out-and-back buoyed course, Beach Sprint Rowing uses a dynamic, head-to-head racing format that provides an exciting race experience for both competitors and fans.
"I am thrilled that World Rowing is introducing Beach Sprint Rowing as a new discipline in the world of rowing," said Amanda Kraus, USRowing CEO. "As we gear up for the 2028 Olympics on our home soil in Los Angeles, the inclusion of Beach Sprint Rowing is especially exciting. This fusion of rowing and the beach environment is a remarkable step forward for our sport. The dynamic blend of speed, strategy, and the unpredictable elements of sand and surf promise an electrifying experience for rowers and fans alike."
Beach Sprint Rowing provides an opportunity for more access to rowing at a lower cost of entry across the United States, requiring only a small piece of land and water to train and compete. The visibility of this discipline on the world stage promises to ignite new passion for the sport in the U.S. and worldwide.
"With today's announcement that the IOC and the 2028 Olympics have added Beach Sprint Rowing to the Olympic program for Los Angeles, we are pleased to introduce this new disciple on the world's biggest stage," said Josy Verdonkschot, USRowing Chief High Performance Officer. "Beach Sprints is fast, intense, and unpredictable, giving fans a chance to experience a whole new side of rowing. We look forward to building on the groundwork that has already been laid by coach Marc Oria and successful athletes like Chris Bak as we prepare to field a medal-caliber team for Los Angeles and beyond."
The specific events and location will be announced at a later date.
The U.S. won five medals at the 2023 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals in Barletta, Italy, including gold in the mixed quadruple sculls with coxswain.
