San Jose will host the biggest e-sports event in the country this winter.
According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News, the downtown SAP Center was named as the next venue for a major tournament for e-sports, which is a growing global phenomenon in which thousands of fans crowd into sports arenas to watch their favorite teams battle in the virtual worlds of popular video games.
Organizers say they're hopeful the Intel Extreme Masters tournament will bring sell-out crowds on Dec. 6 and 7 to cheer from the stands as teams play "League of Legends" and "StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm," in an 18,000-seat arena that's usually home to rock concerts and Sharks hockey games.
"This event marks a significant milestone in the stadium-ification of e-sports," said a representative for Twitch.tv, the fast-growing video streaming service that plans to carry the tournament live to an online audience of several million viewers.
