The Sea Otter Classic will offer a new competition for the 2016 event: an off-road e-bike race. According to Velo News, the 26th running of the annual festival, held in Monterey, California, will include a 60-minute e-bike race on Friday, April 15. It describes the course as a hybrid between short-track and cross-country mountain bike racing. According to the race registration page, the course “will offer a few road descents, single track trails, challenging distance, and a bit of climbing.”
There are six age-group categories per gender in the e-bike race. Organizers did not specify qualifications or restrictions for what kinds of e-bikes would be permitted. The e-bike category is not sanctioned by USA Cycling.
As the electric-assist bikes have become more popular, concerns have arisen over trail access. Moab, Utah’s BLM office banned the bikes on non-motorized trails in 2014.
