On Labor Day, Sept. 5, the ribbon cutting for Del Oro High School's new pool was officially cut just in time for two major high school water polo tournaments that will take place over the next three weekends.
Placer Valley Tourism (PVT) contributed a capital grant of $20,000 to help bridge the final gap in funding for this huge project. The original pool was built in 1969 and was poorly suited for present day swim and water polo standards. The Del Oro Aquatic Center now proudly features a pool facility that can be used for both high school and community swim and water polo events.
The investment for PVT was an easy one to make because by contributing to this project it provides an additional quality swim facility within our footprint and in turn it opens the doors for bigger, more competitive swim and water polo tournaments in the future by having more accessible pools.
The first up will be the Sierra Shoot Out Water Polo Tournament that takes place over the course of two weekends. The Boys Varsity is scheduled for Sept. 9-10 and the Girls Varsity on Sept. 16-17. This annual event brings close to 55 teams to the area each weekend and will utilize the Sierra College pool as well as Del Oro and Whitney High School pools.
Woodcreek High School will host their annual tournament, the California Capital Challenge, in a similar fashion with the Boys Varsity up first on the weekend of Sept. 16-17. 22 teams will be competing at the Roseville Aquatics Complex and Antelope High School due to the Sierra Shoot Out Girls tournament occurring at the same time.
On Sept. 23-24, the Girls Varsity portion for the California Capital Challenge will take place at the Roseville Aquatics Complex as well as Whitney and Del Oro High Schools. TJ Kay, president of Woodcreek Aquatics, was thrilled that the pool opened in time and allows them to grow their tournament for the girls portion with 28 teams scheduled to compete.
