The Sierra College Aquatics Department and Placer Valley Tourism are excited to kick off the high school water polo season by hosting the annual Sierra Shoot Out Water Polo Tournament for both boys and girls high school teams throughout California. These tournaments traditionally start the weekend after Labor Day and are divided into two separate weekends where this year the boy's teams will compete on September 11-12 and the girl's teams on September 18-19.
Both weekends the teams will be utilizing the Sierra College Aquatics Complex as well as the Whitney, Rocklin and Oakmont High School's pool facilities due to the fact that both tournaments are full to maximum capacity with 52 boy's teams competing and 56 girl's teams eager to be crowned champion of this long-running, distinguished tournament. The action starts at 7 a.m. on the Friday of play and games will continue into the late evening around 9 p.m. Saturday, as the teams get whittled down, they will still start at 7 a.m. but should be wrapping up by 5 p.m.
Scott Decker, Sierra College Aquatics Director, explained that the girls portion of the tournament started 21 years ago and because it was so successful they decided to bring the boy's teams into the mix by adding a tournament for them about ten years ago. It quickly became as popular and competitive as the girl's tournament and helped further the fundraising aspect this tournament provides for the Sierra College Aquatics Complex.
"The tournament has a five game guarantee for all teams and the competition will be fierce as top schools from all over California come to compete," added Decker. "It is considered the best and biggest high school water polo tournament in the west and we love hosting it every year!"
