For the first time in seven years, the Western Zone Swim Championships are being held in Northern California, in Placer Valley. Since its first and only other stint at the Roseville Aquatics Complex in 1997, several records established there remain untouched. This All-Star swim meet consists of 500 hand-picked swimmers from the Western Zone -- the cream of the crop from every regional swim committee. Former competitors include Olympians Summer Sanders, Natalie Coughlin, Missy Franklin, Scott Weltz, and Chloe Sutton.
On August 7th through 10th, young athletes from 9-14 years-old intend to make swimming history. Placer Valley Tourism has joined ranks with California Capital Aquatics to bring this enormous USA Swim-sanctioned event to fruition in Roseville.
Competitors will be coming from 16 western regions to break records and triumph over other teams in the running for the Scottie Aschermann Team Champion Trophy and the Adam Szmidt Team Sportsmanship Award. Competitive events include various distances in categories including Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Relays and Medleys. Alaska, Hawaii, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, California, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming will be represented in the meet.
1997 was the year that four still-standing records were made-two of these records were set by Californian swimmers. Five swimmers made two of these still-standing records: an 11/12 Boys 400-Meter Freestyle Relay and a 17/18 Boys 200-Meter Butterfly. The Californian 11/12 record-holders are: Jennifer Bingham of Central for her Girls 200-Meter Freestyle time and Karl Frisinger of Pacific for his Boys 400-Meter Freestyle time.
This event is open to the public and will feature a variety of vendors and concessions.
