Rising American tennis star Amanda Anisimova, who thrilled fans with a semifinal finish at this year’s French Open, has signed to play two World TeamTennis matches this July for the San Diego Aviators at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
Anisimova, a resident of Aventura, Fla., will be in San Diego’s line-up on Thursday, July 25 against the New York Empire and on Friday, July 26 versus the Aviators' Southern California rival, the Orange County Breakers. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. (PDT).
Earlier this month at the French Open in Paris, Anisimova stunned defending champion Simona Halep of Romania 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals, where she fell to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty of Australia 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3.
“I’m really excited about playing World TeamTennis for the San Diego Aviators this July,” said Anisimova. “I’m sure it will be a great experience and I look forward to being a part of the team.”
The 17-year-old tennis sensation is currently ranked a career-high No. 26 in the Women’s Tennis Association singles rankings. This past April, she captured her first career WTA singles title in Bogota, Colombia, defeating Aviators teammate Astra Sharma of Australia in the final 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Anisimova is no stranger to San Diego. In 2016, she competed in the USTA Billie Jean King Girls' 18s National Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center, where she reached the singles semifinals.
Last week, the Aviators announced that Taylor Fritz, a native of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., will play for San Diego in the home opener on Friday, July 19 against the Las Vegas Rollers and a road match on Saturday, July 20 versus the Orange County Breakers.
In addition to Sharma and Fritz, the Aviators roster for the 2019 WTT season includes doubles specialist Jonny O'Mara of Great Britain, American Christian Harrison and Germany’s Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who played for the Aviators in 2018.
