Placer Valley Tourism will become the naming-rights sponsor of the Roseville Soccer Complex, a state-of-the-art facility that will elevate Placer Valley as a sports tourism destination and generate millions of dollars for the local economy.
The newly-named Placer Valley Soccer Complex – located at 2600 Westbrook Blvd. in west Roseville – will feature 10 artificial-turf soccer fields that can also be used for flag football, field hockey, lacrosse, rugby and quadball. The complex will include the latest LED lighting, two plazas, a perimeter walking path, a universally accessible playground and 950 parking spaces making it also a great place for social events.
The Roseville City Council approved the 12-year naming-rights sponsorship agreement with Placer Valley Tourism during a meeting Wednesday, Oct. 16. Placer Valley Tourism (PVT) will pay $5 million over the life of the sponsorship.
“With our focus on Sports Tourism, having PVT as the title sponsor of this best-in-class facility is a continuation of a partnership that benefits the region,” said Roseville Mayor Bruce Houdesheldt.
The Placer Valley Soccer Complex is scheduled to be completed in late 2025, with the first sports tournaments and social events possible in January 2026.
“It’s another strategy to expand sports tourism for Placer Valley Tourism and the community,” said Kim Summers, CEO of Placer Valley Tourism and @the Grounds, home of the Roebbelen Center. “The soccer complex checks another big box.”
The Placer Valley Soccer Complex – through the marketing efforts of the City of Roseville and Placer Valley Tourism – will attract large sports tournaments and more than 600,000 athletes and fans every year, generating at least $15 million to the local economy, from hotel rooms to meals at restaurants.
“This long field project is something we have been looking forward to for many years and we are thrilled to announce our sponsorship,” said Vanessa Phillips, Chair of the Placer Valley Tourism Board and Area Managing Director of Highgate Hotels. The company manages five hotels in Roseville. “This will add yet another dynamic sports venue to our region, attracting a variety of sporting events and generating a significant economic boost to lodging, restaurants, retail and entertainment for the local community.”
The Placer Valley Soccer Complex will join a deep lineup of sports venues – and sports tourism marketing opportunities – in the region. Placer Valley Tourism has embraced the fast-growing sports tourism industry, helping fund improvements to ball diamonds, sports fields and even the Sierra College aquatic center in recent years.
But the most ambitious – and easily the largest in investment at $34 million and size – was the Roebbelen Center located @the Grounds in Roseville that opened in February 2020. The massive building, able to accommodate 12 basketball courts or 24 volleyball courts, has become one of the premier indoor sports venues on the West Coast.
The Roebbelen Center has held more than 150 events and generated 48,000-plus hotel stays during the past three years. The economic impact exceeds $14 million over that period.
“We still have some hotel capacity, especially in the winter months,” Summers said. “The Roebbelen Center isn’t the only answer to the solution.”
Local groups, including Placer United and Roseville FC, will also use the Placer Valley Soccer Complex, one of the largest in Northern California. The organization will lease some of the fields throughout the year.
“Up until now, our training model has been spread across various fields throughout Placer County,” said Kevin Unsworth, Director of Boys Coaching for Placer United. The organization also has a 27,000-square-foot indoor facility in Rocklin. “With the opening of the Placer Valley Soccer Complex, we’ll be able to bring nearly 1,000 athletes through this facility each week, fostering a stronger sense of club culture and unity.”
Placer United will also host major tournaments, including those that attract college coaches and recruiters looking for players, at the $61 million soccer complex. Placer United has about 35 athletes advance to the college level every year.
“With the opening of the new Placer Valley Soccer Complex, we are excited to host premier-level competitions that will attract top teams from across the region,” said Jeanne Mabry, Tournament Director for Placer United. “This facility allows us to bring high-caliber events to the area, driving increased foot traffic to local businesses and contributing to the economic growth of Placer County. It’s a win-win for our club, the community, and the local economy.”
