adidas Outdoor, the athletic brand in the outdoors, announced in conjunction with the City of Aspen, it will sponsor the fifth annual Aspen Backcountry Marathon & Half Marathon, Aug. 13, 2016. The single-track course is a new route for this year’s race, boasting views of the Elk Mountains and the City of Aspen, and is run almost exclusively on high country dirt trails. Additionally, the race will continue to be environmentally friendly, and will follow the principals of Leave No Trace, Center for Outdoor Ethics. The Aspen Backcountry Marathon has been, and will continue to be committed to making good decisions when it comes to the environment and its long-term health. To further this cause, the race will be a cupless course, and for hydration will provide reusable soft-cups to race participants.
“While adidas Outdoor has been partnering with the City of Aspen for the last few years, this is the first year adidas Outdoor is involved with the marathon” said Greg Thomsen, managing director, adidas Outdoor U.S. “Our participation in this race strengthens our relationship with the residents, retailers and leaders of this premier mountain town and reinforces our commitment to the trail running category. Race participants will see first-hand our wide selection of specific trail running apparel and footwear, designing some of the fastest and lightest trail shoes on the market.”
Registration is currently open, and both the marathon and the half marathon is capped at 250 participants. Click here to register for the race. The total cash prize for the marathon is $2,400; $600 to the first male and female finishers; $400 for second place and $200 for third place. A “King of the Mountain” prize of will be awarded to the first male and female marathon entrant, to crest the first big climb, Sunny Side Trail. They will each win a $250 gift card from adidas Outdoor, but must finish the marathon to qualify.
