The Sunshine State Games, presented by Amazon, comes to Brevard County beaches for the first time when the International Beach Games will be held at Pelican Beach Park, in Satellite Beach, the weekend of September 24-25.
Florida’s Olympic-style sports festival has featured the International Beach Games since 2016 and has taken advantage of the state’s beach destinations to offer a wide array of sports opportunities.
The 2022 Sunshine State Games, presented by Amazon, International Beach Games features five sports and an introduction to a sport quickly gaining ground on an international level.
Pelican Beach Park hosts Surfing and Open Water Swim while Beach Volleyball will be held at Satellite Beach High School and Stand Up Paddleboard is at Paddle Paradise on the Indian River. Teqball, played on a rounded table, will be introduced and Beach Games attendees will have a chance to give the sport a try.
"Satellite Beach's Pelican Beach Park is an ideal location for our 2022 International Beach Games as it is a great surfing break, has excellent amenities and located right between two of the Space Coast's most desirable areas in Cocoa Beach and Melbourne," said Mitch Varnes, a Brevard County sports promoter working with the Games. " The City of Satellite Beach has been a great partner and is looking forward to hosting the event."
Surfing and Beach Volleyball will be two-day events while Stand Up Paddleboard, Open Water Swim is a one-day event.
Besides the Games being held in Brevard County for the first time, the 2022 International Beach Games also marks the first time Surfing and Open Water Swim have been contested in the 43-year history of the Sunshine State Games.
“The 2022 International Beach Games will showcase another excellent Florida destination and sports venue in Satellite Beach’s Pelican Beach Park,” said Florida Sports Foundation President/CEO Angela A. Suggs. “We continually strive to provide sports events to meet the desires of Florida’s amateur athletes.”
Saturday ‘s Beach Volleyball competition features Adult Men’s & Women’s AAA and A Divisions and AAA Men’s & Women’s Divisions. On Sunday, Adult Coed, Juniors U12/14 and U16/18 Divisions will be played. This tournament is sanctioned by USA Volleyball (USAV), which requires each participant to have a current USAV membership. Space is VERY limited and each division will be based on a 5-team minimum, per division. Entry Fees are $70 for the AAA Division and $50 for all other divisions. The registration deadline is Wednesday, September 21.
