Boca Raton Championship Announces Changes to Event Status

The 2020 Boca Raton Championship will be held Oct. 26 - Nov. 1 at The Old Course at Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, with a 54-player field competing for the final 36 spots and chance to advance to the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship, contested in Phoenix the following week.

After 13 years as a PGA TOUR Champions regular-season event, the Boca Raton Championship will become the second tournament in the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs starting in 2020. 

In addition to the elevated Playoffs status, the Boca Raton Championship purse will increase from $1.7 million to $2 million starting in 2020. All three rounds of the event will be broadcast live on GOLF Channel.

Since 2007, PGA TOUR Champions has annually conducted one of its first full-field events in Boca Raton. Local resident Bernhard Langer is a five-time winner of the Charles Schwab Cup, and won the Boca Raton Championship for the second time in February of this year. Other Boca Raton winners include Tom Lehman, who won in 2011 en route to winning the Charles Schwab Cup later that year, and 2017 champion Scott McCarron, who has led this year's standings since April.

But most importantly, it will continue critical financial support of the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation while generating tremendous exposure for Boca Raton and Palm Beach County."

The tournament will continue to be managed by Pro Links Sports, with Boca Raton Champions Golf Charities, Inc., serving as the 501(c)(3) host organization of the Boca Raton Championship

The Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs begin with the top-72 players from the regular-season money list. The Playoffs will open with the Dominion Energy Charity Classic in Richmond, Virginia, followed by the Boca Raton Championship (54 players) and the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship (36 players).

At the start of the Playoffs, season-long money accrued by players converts to points, with each of the final three events featuring double points ($100,000 = 200,000 points). The player with the most points at the conclusion of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship wins the Charles Schwab Cup.

The Boca Raton Championship replaces the Invesco QQQ Championship in Thousand Oaks, California, which has been the second Playoffs event since 2017. World Golf Hall of Fame member Colin Montgomerie won this year's title on Sunday afternoon at Sherwood Country Club, and the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship will begin on Thursday at Phoenix Country Club.
