Athletes from across the U.S. converged in Clermont last weekend for the AdventHealth Great Floridian Triathlon. The 2021 USA Triathlon National Ultra-Distance Championship. The ultra-distance triathlon, or full distance triathlon as it is often called, featured a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run. The race took place on October 23, 2021, at the World Triathlon Destination, Clermont, FL.
Now in its 31st year, the Great Floridian Triathlon (GFT) is the nation’s longest running independent (non-Ironman licensed) full distance triathlon. Since its inception in 1991, the GFT has attracted athletes from all 50 states and more than 35 countries. The GFT is known around the world for being one of the most challenging full distance races in the country. The tremendous support offered by the City of Clermont, Lake County, neighboring communities, and local residents and businesses, ensure a world class race experience with small town charm.
The Great Floridian Triathlon is the marquee event within the AdventHealth Great Floridian Multisport Festival. The festival included multiple triathlon distances including a duathlon and aqua bike options that ran concurrently with the GFT. This year’s festival also includes a 15K Sunset Run.
“We were honored to have the opportunity to host the USA Triathlon Ultra-Distance National Championship during the 31st running of the Great Floridian Triathlon”, exclaimed Fred Sommer, event founder and long-time race director. “The national championship designation is a testament to the event’s rich history and longevity, the strong community support, and the passion of the event management team.”
