USA Triathlon announced that the first-ever USA Triathlon Multisport National Championships will take place from Nov. 10-11, 2018, as part of the Miami Man Triathlon in Miami, Florida.
The event schedule will feature long-course triathlon, long-course duathlon, aquathlon and aquabike races, all of which will qualify top athletes for the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Age Group World Championships in their respective disciplines.
The 2018 Multisport National Championships mark the first time these four multisport formats will be contested at one event, rather than on different dates and in various locations throughout the year. This gives athletes the opportunity to participate in multiple races over the weekend if they choose, including two events on the same day. More than 2,500 athletes are expected to attend.
The Miami Man Triathlon debuted in 2005 as the first long course triathlon offered in the South Florida region, and it has since become the pinnacle of many Floridian triathletes’ annual schedules. Miami Man will also serve as the 2017 USA Triathlon Long Course Triathlon and Aquabike National Championships on Nov. 12.
Miami Man was created and is organized each year by MultiRace, the largest multiple-sport event management company in the state of Florida.
“USA Triathlon looks forward to offering a variety of racing opportunities over one weekend at the first-ever Multisport National Championships,” said USA Triathlon National Events Director Brian D’Amico. “We have an excellent partner in MultiRace, which has a 15-year history of hosting premier multisport events across the state of Florida.”
“MultiRace is excited to be working with USA Triathlon on the 2018 Multisport Festival National Championships,” said Race Director Brian Huether. “It’s Miami in November – what more could you want?!”
The course for all races is centered around Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park in Miami-Dade County. Athletes will swim in Larry and Penny’s Lake and bike through unincorporated farmland areas of Redland, Florida, on paved roads. The run course winds through the palm tree-lined Zoo Miami, passing various animal exhibits before returning to Larry and Penny Park for the finish.
Racing will begin Saturday with the aquathlon, organized as a 1.5-mile run, 0.6-mile swim and another 1.5-mile run. Open 5- and 10-kilometer running races, which are not national championship events, are also set for Saturday.
The action continues Sunday with the long-course triathlon, which covers a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. The long course duathlon, featuring a 6-mile run, 56-mile bike and a 6.6-mile run, and the aquabike, featuring a 1.2-mile swim and 56-mile bike, are also set for Sunday. Finally, Miami Man will offer an Olympic-distance triathlon that is not part of the national championship program (0.6-mile swim, 22-mile bike, 6.6-mile run).
The increasing popularity of multisport events is reflected at the international level this year, with the ITU supporting a host of races at the 2017 ITU Multisport World Championships in Penticton, British Columbia. The world championships, which run from August 18-27, will feature age-group through elite races in duathlon, cross (off-road) triathlon, aquathlon, aquabike and long course triathlon, including paratriathlon and relay components.
