The IRONMAN Group and Augusta Sports Council (ASC) have agreed to extend their partnership with the continuation of the IRONMAN 70.3 Augusta triathlon through 2025.
The next edition of IRONMAN 70.3 Augusta is scheduled to take place on September 26, 2021.
“For over a decade, Augusta has continued to be one of the most popular destinations on the IRONMAN 70.3 circuit,” said Elizabeth O’Brien, Managing Director North America for The IRONMAN Group.
“The tremendous support the event receives from the entire community showcases the city of Augusta’s desire to be a true sporting destination that also embraces the IRONMAN spirit.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership through 2025 and grow our contributions to the rich sporting culture in Augusta. We are looking forward to returning to the Augusta region for the next five years.”
Located along the banks of the Savannah River, Augusta is the second largest and oldest city in the state of Georgia. Affectionately known as the Garden City of the South, Augusta’s blend of southern hospitality, history, outdoor activities and a growing tech industry make for a destination venue for athletes and spectators alike.
‘Home to the globally recognized Masters Tournament and brimming with southern hospitality and sporting allure, Augusta is used to rolling out the red carpet for athletes and visitors alike to show the best the city has to offer.’
“Hosting IRONMAN 70.3 Augusta provides us with the opportunity to showcase Augusta, Georgia as a sports destination throughout the country and globally,” said Bob Evans, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Augusta Sports Council.
“Augusta has long been recognized for golf, but IRONMAN allows us to expand our attraction to other world-class athletes and visitors.”
“This event is also among the largest economic impact generators for our tourism businesses – most of which are locally owned, and they absolutely look forward to this each year,” added Bennish Brown, CEO of the Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The ASC estimates a total economic impact value of over US$30 million with 38,000 registered athletes between 2009-2019. In addition, the IRONMAN Foundation has distributed over US$185,000 in charitable giveback to non-profit initiatives and groups in the greater Augusta area in conjunction with the IRONMAN 70.3 Augusta triathlon.
IRONMAN 70.3 Augusta, which is historically one of the largest IRONMAN 70.3 events in North America, features an athlete friendly course drawing thousands from around the world to participate each year.
The athletes begin their journey with a 1.2-mile downriver swim in the Savannah River, a 56-mile bike through South Augusta and a flat 13.1-mile run ending in vibrant downtown Augusta.
