The Macon Tennis Association will welcome more than 1,200 athletes to two tournaments in July. The USTA National Level 3 tournament and the Junior Team Tennis Georgia State Championships will be played at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center in Macon, Georgia, drawing some of the top youth tennis players from around the state and country.
The USTA National Level 3 tournament, scheduled for July 7-10, brings the top 16 and 18-year-old players from across the nation. Both individual and doubles competitions occur over the four-day tournament.
“This national level tournament is an extremely big deal for Macon and in the tennis community. These are future tennis pros and the competition is strong,” said Penny Gibbs, Executive Director of the Macon Tennis Association.
The Junior Team Tennis Georgia State Championships have been held in Macon for the entire 20-year history of the event. The tournament brings as many as 1,000 youth, ages 8 through 18. Players come from across the state of Georgia and represent all skill levels, from beginner to advanced.
The Championships introduce young players to tournament competition, with opportunities for learning, fun and team spirit maximized.
“The event emphasizes fun, fitness and friends,” said Gibbs. “This is one of our favorite tournaments every year because we look forward to introducing the youngest players to the tournament experience for the very first time. We get to see returning players grow and mature in their skills, as well.” Gibbs noted that multiple generations of competitors are represented in families, as parents who participated previously are now bringing their children to compete.
