U.S. Figure Skating has selected Cedar Rapids as the host of the Midwestern Adult Sectional Championship. It is the first time this event will be held in Iowa. ImOn Ice is hosting the competition March 4-6, 2022, in partnership with the Eastern Iowa Figure Skating Club. The event is expected to bring 85 athletes and officials to the community, generating over $30,000 of visitor spending.
“The U.S. Figure Skating adult skating community is thrilled to be coming to Cedar Rapids in March of 2022 for the first Midwestern Adult Sectional Figure Skating Championships to be hosted in the state of Iowa,” said Lori Fussell, National Vice Chair for Adult Skating Competitions, U.S. Figure Skating Competitions Committee. “The ImOn Ice facility is beautiful and we are grateful to the team from the Eastern Iowa Figure Skating Club, the Cedar Rapids Tourism Office and ImOn Ice for welcoming our athletes to Cedar Rapids to compete for the opportunity to advance to the 2022 U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships.”
The adult sectional championships are held in March in the Eastern, Midwestern and Pacific Coast sections. Events include pairs, ice dancing and multiple levels of free skating. The top four skaters from each level advance to compete in their corresponding event at the U.S. Adult Championships, held in April. A nonqualifying competition is also held in conjunction with each adult sectional championship.
“Our goal is to continue bringing new events and athletic competitions to Cedar Rapids and ImOn Ice,” said Erik Hudson, Associate Executive Director of VenuWorks overseeing Sports Tourism. “This is a great win and we look forward to showcasing our facilities and community to new visitors.”
