Sep 19, 2016

U.S. elite triathletes, including 2016 U.S. Olympians Ben Kanute and Katie Zaferes, will race for national titles and a share of a $10,000 prize purse on Oct. 2 at the 2016 USA Triathlon Elite National Championship, held at New Orleans' South Shore Harbor.

The elite triathletes vying for national titles will complete a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run on a multi-lap, spectator friendly course. The elite women will start at 11:30 a.m. CT, and the elite men will follow at 2 p.m. CT. Kanute (Geneva, Ill.) is the defending USA Triathlon Elite National Champion, and Zaferes (Hampstead, Md.) finished third last year among the women at Elite Nationals. Both represented the U.S. at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games, along with fellow past Elite National Champions Gwen Jorgensen (2015, 2014, 2013) and Joe Maloy (2014). A complete start list for the Oct. 2 event will be available closer to the event date, and more information is available at usatriathlon.org.

USA Triathlon Elite Nationals headlines the inaugural Endurance Foundation Festival, which is also comprised of four age-group races: Olympic-distance triathlon, sprint triathlon, duathlon and aquabike. The age-group events kick off the race-day action in New Orleans, beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT on Oct. 2. Registration is open now at endurancefoundationfest.com, with age-group athletes racing on a similar course layout as the elite athletes. Clubs may also form teams to compete in the Premier Club Championship.

Premier Event Management (PEM) will produce the 2016 USA Triathlon Elite National Championships and the Endurance Foundation Festival.

"We are excited to produce and host the Elite Championships for USA Triathlon on the same day as our inaugural Endurance Foundation Festival in the Crescent City," said Bill Burke, Owner and Race Director of PEM. "This is a great opportunity for our age-group athletes, local triathletes and fans of the sport to watch our recent Olympians compete with other elites."
