The Spring Fury Cyclocross Series began on Sunday, April 6 at 2:00pm at the Grand Rapids Bike Park (580 Kirtland, Grand Rapids, MI). The Spring Fury Cyclocross Series will be sponsored and hosted by the Central District Cyclery. The series conclusion is scheduled to take place during the fifth annual Meijer State Games of Michigan Summer Games.
Cyclocross is a form of bicycle racing and consists of laps around a short track featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills, and obstacles adding to the difficulty of a normal cycling race. The race requires riders to quickly dismount and carry the bike through the course and obstacles. Almost any bike can be used, just no bar ends on the mountain bike.
“The Spring Fury Cyclocross Race Series is intended as a training series and is beginner friendly,” said Nate Phelps, Owner of the Central District Cyclery. “Our goal is to show people a new sport that anyone can be involved in and have an awesome time participating.”
This past weekend’s race kicked off the six race cyclocross series. Any biker is welcome to participate in as many races in the series as they would like. There will be free training clinics each Wednesday night before a race throughout the season to help train racers. The series total is the best of four out of the six races with the lowest score being dropped.
Seven divisions will be offered for racers to compete in: men, masters, women, under 23, under 15, singlespeed, and fatbike. Each division will feature an A, B, or C class. Each race has a $10 entry fee with $5 for each additional category. The under 15 division is $5 with an adult race ($15). The schedule is as follows:
