This year will mark a major global milestone for women’s sports when the world’s first stadium purpose-built for a women’s professional sports team opens in Kansas City, Missouri, in March. CPKC Stadium will serve as the home to the city’s professional women’s soccer team, the Kansas City Current, on the banks of the Missouri River, with views also facing the city’s downtown skyline.
In time for Women’s History Month, the 11,500-seat stadium will welcome soccer fans on March 16 for the kickoff of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season and the team’s home opener versus the Portland Thorns. The stadium will have a range of seating options, including Club seating as close as 15 feet from the pitch, reserved seating in the upper and lower bowl with panoramic views and the Supporters Section with general admission seating for the most passionate fans.
Fans can support local restaurants and retailers at the stadium by eating at women-owned dining partners such as Billie’s Grocery, Yoli Tortilleria and Waldo Thai, and shopping merchandise at The Official Team Store from local brands like Charlie Hustle, Made Mobb and Nickel & Suede.
The development comes as part of a renaissance to the Berkley Riverfront area, which will also welcome the five-story, 118-room Origin Hotel (set to open in April) and an extension of the free KC Streetcar, slated to be complete in 2025.
