The last crews that can earn a chance to race at a world cup event and earn a spot on the 2015 U.S. National Team will take to the water May 12-14 on Mercer Lake, West Windsor, N.J., at National Selection Regatta 2.
Twenty crews from 13 clubs are slated to compete in four events including the men’s and women’s single sculls, lightweight men’s double sculls and men’s quadruple sculls. The winners of each of the events will earn the right to row at either of the remaining world cup races and earn a nomination to the U.S. team with a top-seven finish.
There are seven entries in the men’s single. Among the competitors are Community Rowing Inc.’s Lucas Wilhelm (Miranda, Calif.), who finished sixth in the eight at the 2013 World University Games, Craftsbury Sculling Center’s William Cowles (Farmington, Conn.), who won the men’s single speed order event at NSR 1 and finished eighth in the quadruple sculls at the 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup III, and Potomac Boat Club’s Lenny Futterman (New York, N.Y.), who finished 21st in the men's single sculls at the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
Competing in the women’s single sculls are eight athletes including Cambridge Boat Club’s 2012 Olympian and two-time senior national team single sculler Gevvie Stone (Newton, Mass.) and two USRowing National Team Training Center – Princeton scullers in Kelly Pierce (Oakton, Va.) and Emily Huelskamp (Sainte Genevieve, Mo.). Also competing in the event is Y Quad Cities Rowing’s Elizabeth Sharis, a three-time junior national team member who finished 10th at the 2014 World Rowing Junior Championships.
There are three crews competing in the lightweight men’s double sculls event including two Cambridge Boat Club crews comprised of athletes who have previously competed on the senior national team, including Joshua Konieczny (Millbury, Ohio) and Andrew Campbell, Jr. (New Canaan, Conn.), and Austin Meyer (Cohoes, N.Y.) and Colin Ethridge (Laytonsville, Md.).
Konieczny and Meyer were in the lightweight men’s double that finished 10th at the 2014 World Rowing Championships, Campbell rowed the lightweight single in the event and finished 13th. Ethridge finished seventh in the lightweight quadruple sculls at the 2013 World Rowing Championships.
In the men’s quadruple sculls event, two crews have entered competition. Representing California Rowing Club is the crew of Hans Struzyna (Seattle, Wash.), John Madura (West Milford, N.J.), Ryan Shelton (Wrightwood, Calif.) and Paul Marcy (Guilford, Vermont). Struzyna and Shelton finished 13th in the event at the 2013 World Rowing Championships, and Madura represented the U.S. in the double sculls at the 2012 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
Also entered in the event is Craftsbury Sculling Center’s Benjamin Dann (Pound Ridge, N.J.), John Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio), London Olympian Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Thomas Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio).
Dann, John Graves and Peter Graves were in the quad that finished eighth at the 2014 World Rowing Championships. Thomas Graves competed in the double in the 2011 World Rowing Championships. At NSR 1, Dann and John Graves won the men’s double sculls event.
Racing begins with time trials at 7 p.m. Tuesday and runs through Thursday with finals starting at 7:30 a.m. Finals will be streamed live on USRowing’s YouTube Channel.
