Trials to determine the small boat crews that will compete in the World Rowing Junior Championships and the Para-rowing events at the World Rowing Championships are scheduled to run July 5-7 on Mercer Lake, West Windsor, N.J.
In the junior events, racing will be contested in the men’s and women’s junior single sculls, men’s and women’s junior double sculls and men’s and women’s junior pair. In the Para-rowing events, racing will be held in four boat classes including the arms and shoulders men’s single sculls, arms and shoulders women’s single sculls, trunk and arms mixed double sculls and legs, trunk and arms mixed double sculls.
Some 30 crews from 18 clubs are registered to compete. The winners of the junior events will be nominated to the team that will compete in the 2015 World Junior Rowing Championships August 6-9, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Winners in the Para-rowing events will be nominated to the team that will compete at the 2015 World Rowing Championships August 29-Sept. 6, in Aiguebelette, France.
In the junior men’s single sculls, there are four scullers entered from four different clubs including Potomac Boat Club, Seattle Rowing Center, Space Coast Crew and one unaffiliated.
The junior women’s single sculls will have seven competitors including Maritime Rowing Club’s Claire Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.), who finished 12th in the event at last year’s junior world championships with her sister, Mary. There is one sculler from the Caloosa Coast Rowing Club and five entries from the USRowing Sculling Selection Camp including Narragansett Boat Club’s Eliza Kallfelz (Jamestown, R.I.), who won gold in the double sculls with her sister, Emily, at the 2015 USRowing Youth National Championships.
There is only one crew entered in the junior women’s double sculls—USRowing Sculling Selection Camp’s Elise Beuke and Isabella Stricker. In the men’s junior double sculls, there are six crews competing, two from the Conshohocken Rowing Center, two from Potomac Boat Club, one from Riverside Boat Club and one from Seattle Rowing Center.
In the junior men’s pair event there are three crews entered from Montclair High School, Mercer Juniors and Saugatuck Rowing Club.
Rowing in the junior women’s pair event are four crews—one from Chicago Rowing Center, one from Princeton National Rowing Association’s Mercer Juniors and two from the USRowing Junior Women’s High Performance Camp.
In the Para-rowing men’s and women’s arms and shoulders single sculls, there is only one competitor for each. Rowing in the men’s event, unaffiliated, is Blake Haxton (Columbus, Ohio). Haxton finished fourth in the event at the 2014 World Rowing Championships.
In the women’s event is Jacqui Kapinowski (Point Pleasant, N.J.). Kapinowski is also a returning U.S. Para-athlete. She finished ninth in the trunk and arms double at the 2011 World Rowing Championships.
In the trunk and arms mixed double, the Sarasota County Rowing Club crew of Betsy Irwin Mitchell (Sarasota, Fla.) and 2008 Paralympian Scott Brown (Collingdale, Pa.) is rowing unopposed.
In the legs, trunk and arms mixed double sculls, two crews are entered including one from Three Rivers Rowing Association and one from Community Rowing, Inc. Rowing in the CRI boat is Natalie McCarthy (Seattle, Wash.), who won bronze in the event at the 2013 World Rowing Championships, and Jesse Karmazin (Washington, D.C.), who won silver in the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing.
