The Albuquerque Sol, which plays in the amateur PDL in 2014, would like to build a downtown soccer stadium by 2019 to be able to jump to the USL and has set 2024 as the target to join MLS.
“We’re not looking at anything extravagant, we’re looking at 8,000 to 10,000 seat multi-use stadium,” Sol general manager Larry Espinoza told television station KRQE.
The Sol has played at St. Pius X High School and will play two games at the University of New Mexico in 2016. It would need to have its own soccer stadium to meet USL requirements, however. Estimates on the cost of a Sol soccer stadium are around $10 million.
“We feel that it would be a great shot in the arm for Albuquerque to have something of that sort downtown,” added Espinoza.
