Celebrating its sixth year, Around the Crown 10K Together with Truist (ATC10K), North Carolina’s largest 10K running race, takes place on September 1, 2024, crowning a year of community development and increasing sustainability measures in Charlotte and the running industry. The race starts and finishes at Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte and temporarily shuts down I-277 where participants run the entire inner loop.
In line with the event’s mission statement of increasing sustainability efforts, ATC10K announced three new initiatives for 2024. First, ATC10K is partnering with Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) to increase participation in multi-modal transportation by giving each participant a free two-day, unlimited use, light rail pass for race weekend to get to and from all event locations and is working with event sponsor Bento Move and Morningstar Storage to allow participants to securely store their personal belongings at the start line. Second, ATC10K is implementing the Green Team, a group of volunteers who will lead the recycling efforts at the expo and race. Additionally, on Saturday, August 31 at 1 p.m. at the event expo, ATC10K is hosting a free Sustainable Panel Discussion with Charlotte-based experts and business owners who specialize in minimizing environmental impacts.
Striving to have a start line that reflects the Queen City’s diverse population, ATC10K implemented year-round activities across several communities in coordination with local organizations such as Sustain Charlotte, Mad Miles Run Club, The Ability Experience, Charlotte Front Runners, Stonewall Sports Charlotte, Sweat Like A Mother, and over 15 running clubs serving Charlotte runners. Additionally, the event facilitated the Feetures' First Timers Club training program and the Charlotte Summer Track Series bringing nearly 1,000 Charlotteans together this summer.
“As we prepare for the sixth annual Around the Crown 10K Together with Truist, it's incredible to see how this event has grown year over year with participants, partners, volunteers, programs, and overall community enthusiasm,” shared Brian Mister, Around the Crown 10K Together with Truist race director. “We want to involve everyone who wants to move Charlotte forward and that includes identifying ways of getting creative, especially in reaching our marginalized communities. This year, we’re especially proud of our new initiatives, including a partnership with CATS to boost multimodal transportation to and from the start and finish lines and our sustainability panel, both of which are key to ensuring that our race not only propels Charlotte forward but does so in a way that’s inclusive and environmentally responsible.”
