Aquathlon National Championship to be Offered in Oklahoma

More Than 300 Multisport Athletes Set to Compete in Swim-Run Event

The 2014 USA Triathlon National Championships season comes to a close this Sunday with the Aquathlon National Championships, held in conjunction with the El Reno Route 66 Aquathlon at Lake El Reno in El Reno, Oklahoma.

More than 300 athletes ages 13-80 will descend on El Reno on Sunday, Oct. 5, hailing from 34 states to compete for national titles on the 1,500-meter swim, 10-kilometer run course. Eight athletes will be seeking to defend the national titles they won last year in Canton, North Carolina, including:

  • Grace Morris (17&Under, Clayton, Mo.)

  • Jenny deHart (35-39, Lexington, Va.)

  • Pieter deHart (35-39, Lexington, Va.)

  • Andrew Farrell (40-44, Orlando, Fla.)

  • Katie McCully (45-49, Eastham, Mass.)

  • Gale Moore (55-59, Columbia, Tenn.)

  • Marc Mone (55-59, Murrieta, Calif.)

  • King Yaeger (65-69, Washington, Mich.)

Additionally, seven athletes on the start list recently won medals at the ITU Aquathlon World Championships, held Aug. 27 in Edmonton, Alberta. Fiona Bayly (45-49, New York, N.Y.) and Donald Ardell (75-79, St. Petersburg, Fla.) captured world titles at the event. Don Nelson (75-79, Tulsa, Okla.) picked up a silver medal, and Andrea Nunez-Smith (20-24, Austin, Texas), J. deHart, P. deHart and McCully earned bronze.

In addition to chasing national titles, athletes also will be competing for spots on Team USA for the 2015 ITU Aquathlon World Championships in Chicago during the week of Sept. 15-20. The top 20 finishers in each age group, rolling down to 25th place, will be eligible for a Team USA berth. Team USA is comprised of amateur athletes who represent the United States at each ITU World Championship event.
