2023 kicks off with a bang as Team USA finds out which athletes will be qualifying for the U.S. National Taekwondo team for a multitude of international events, including the World Taekwondo Championships and the Pan Am Games in the Senior sparring, along with major international events for younger athletes, and in poomsae.
The 2023 Team USA National Team Trials will take place in Tulsa, OK February 10-12 at the Cox Convention Business Convention Center. The 2023 US Team Trial event is only for qualified Senior, Junior, Cadet, & Ultra world-class black belt Sparring and Poomsae Athletes. Qualified athletes include those Senior, Junior, Cadet & Ultra athletes who medaled at a USATKD Major event, and athletes who are ranked highly in both the World Taekwondo and U.S. National rankings.
Additionally, there will be an Open Team Trial in Tulsa to find out which Team USA athletes will represent the United States at the Qualification Tournament for the 2023 Pan American Games, to be held in Santiago, Chile later in the 2023. The Qualification Tournament will take place in Brazil in March. For sparring athletes, the Open Team Trial is in the Olympic weight categories only. For poomsae, athletes will compete as a male/female pair performing a Freestyle pairs and compete in recognized individual poomsae. Para athletes will have an opportunity to compete at the US Pan Am Games Qualifier Team Trial. The winner of this competition will go on to compete at the Qualification Tournament for Pan American Games 2023 to try and earn the Pan American Games spots for Team USA.
USATKD Director of Athlete Affairs, Sherman Nelson said: “This is a huge event for athletes across all taekwondo ages and disciplines, with so many Team USA spots up for grabs – perhaps the most ever in a single tournament. You asked for Team Trials, and we’re bringing it back with a bang! We’re working on making it a spectacular competition, and one we’ll all remember for a long time. Be ready, it’s going to be tough, but the rewards are worth it!”
