Action-Packed Weekend of Sports and Entertainment Awaits in Erie

Erie County is gearing up for an action-packed weekend of sports and entertainment, featuring basketball, volleyball, cheerleading and dance events, starting Friday and running through Sunday.

The Bayfront Convention Center will host two cheer and dance events organized by Champion Cheer Central this weekend.
 

On Saturday, the Winter Beach Bash Cheer and Dance Championships will feature 90 teams with over 1,000 participants from Ohio, New York, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The competition begins at 8 a.m. with awards at 6 p.m. The event continues on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. with awards at 10:30 a.m.

On Sunday, the Winter National Recreational Cheer and Dance Championships, taking place for the first time, will bring 56 teams and nearly 700 participants to the convention center. The first team will compete at 12:30 p.m., with awards at 7 p.m. Award winners will receive National Champion Rings.

“We’re thrilled to introduce the Winter Recreation Nationals for the first time this year,” said Heather Petz, co-owner of Champion Cheer Central. “It’s an exciting new event that celebrates inclusivity and sportsmanship, giving our recreational teams a chance to shine on a national stage.”

The 41st annual Burger King Basketball Classic will tip off Friday at the Joann Mullen Gymnasium at Hagerty Family Events Center with Richmond Heights (Ohio) and Archbishop Wood facing off at 6 p.m. before Cathedral Prep meets Aliquippa at 7:30. The winners will meet on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. following the Classic consolation game at 6. General admission tickets are $7 per night in advance for adults and $5 in advance for students.

Additionally, EPIC Volleyball will host a series of local friendship scrimmage tournaments at Fort LeBoeuf High School as teams prepare for the upcoming season, which begins the week of January 18-19. The Girls 14u scrimmage tournament will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the Girls 17u scrimmage tournament at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
