The Pittsburgh Local Organizing Committee rolled out the red carpet in the City of Champions for the 2022 Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship this weekend. Co-hosted by Saint Vincent College and SportsPITTSBURGH, the eight-team tournament runs now through Nov. 19 at Duquesne University’s UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
The championship match will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets for all three days through Duquesne’s ticket office.
“We are honored and proud to welcome eight of the best Division III women’s volleyball teams to Pittsburgh for the 2022 NCAA Championship,” Susan Hozak, Associate Athletic Director, Compliance, SWA for Saint Vincent College, said. “On behalf of Saint Vincent College, we hope the student-athletes, coaches, support staff, families and friends all have an enjoyable experience.”
The eight competing teams will do more than play for an NCAA title this weekend – they also will collaborate with several Pittsburgh nonprofits, generating far-reaching, positive community impacts.
The teams will partner with SisterFriend, INC., to assemble 800 feminine hygiene care packages for Pittsburgh Public Schools students. The student-athletes also will create holiday-themed greeting cards for St. Anthony’s School Programs, with the cards, as well as the art supplies, donated to the students later this season. Finally, athletes from the Special Olympics of Western Pennsylvania will conduct the “first serve” of each match and also will receive tickets to attend the championship matches.
“The Pittsburgh Local Organizing Committee is committed to not only providing iconic sports experiences for the student-athletes, teams and supporters, but also to generating positive impacts for our local community, which consistently supports and welcomes these NCAA Championship events,” SportsPITTSBURGH Executive Director Jennifer Hawkins said. “We are looking forward to an exciting weekend of volleyball, and we thank the NCAA for once again trusting Pittsburgh as a host.”
The 2022 NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship is the first of 11 events Pittsburgh was awarded for the 2022-26 NCAA cycle. Pittsburgh also will play host to the 2023 National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Regional Championships and the 2023 National Collegiate Women’s Bowling Regional Championships next spring.
Pittsburgh recently completed its most successful cycle of NCAA event bids, hosting 16 preliminary and championship events from Nov. 2018 through March 2022. Those events drew more than 69,000 unique event attendees, producing just over $38 million in direct visitor spending.
