The Erie Sports Commission is pleased to announce that the Erie Warhawks’ annual Battle on the Bay Wrestling Tournament will be contested at the Bayfront Convention Center Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8, 2017.
This is the fifth year that the tournament will be held in Erie. The 2016 event brought more than 300 wrestlers from five states to Erie’s Bayfront Convention Center.
Wrestling will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 7 with the duals competition. The tournament will continue on Sunday, January 8 with the open tournament. Wrestlers will compete on eight full-sized mats for the duration of the tournament. The 2017 tournament is being recognized as a qualifying event for the Ohio Tournament of Champions.
Registration is open until December 30 for wrestlers in four age groups – 8 and under, 9&10, 11&12, and 13&14 – each divided into weight classes. Registration is $35.
Admission is free for spectators.
“Our 2016 event was one of the best we have ever hosted, with hundreds of wrestlers competing from across the region,” said Matt Selker, President of the Erie Warhawks. “With the Erie Sports Commission’s help, we are certain this event will be another successful competition.”
“Battle on the Bay is a great tournament for a number of reasons, only one of which is that it drives tourism in the winter,” said Ron Sertz, Executive Director of the Erie Sports Commission. “The competition brings a swarm of young athletes to a premier venue in our region, and we’re fortunate that the Erie Warhawks continue to put this event together.”
The Erie Warhawks is a local youth wrestling club focused on enforcing proper technique, intense drilling, solid conditioning, and hard work. The club is comprised of wrestlers and coaches from more than 10 schools in Erie and Crawford Counties.
