The Erie Sports Commission announced the first Flagship City Throw Down bouldering competition, set to take place this Saturday at ASCEND Erie, located at 426 State Street.
The event is open to climbers of all skill levels, with categories for youth, beginners and advanced competitors. The Youth Competition will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by two Community Competition waves from noon to 3 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The day will conclude with an after-party and special climbing film screening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
“We're thrilled to host the inaugural Flagship City Throw Down and Erie's first-ever rock climbing competition,” said Chris Rosato Jr., general manager of ASCEND Erie. “This event will not only highlight the incredible climbing community here in Erie, but also offers a fantastic opportunity for participants from around the region to compete in a new gym and against some new faces. We expect to host climbers of all ages and skill levels for a day of fun and friendly competition.”
Participants can register for the competition and find more information on the ASCEND Climbing website. Spectators are welcome to attend and cheer on the climbers throughout the day.
In addition to the climbing competition, which will take over ASCEND Erie's second-floor bouldering area, ASCEND Erie's downstairs rope climbing areas will remain open as normal, allowing families to enjoy a day of fun climbing while getting a glimpse of what a community climbing competition looks like. Visitors and locals will be able to enjoy specials from local food vendors as the event showcases Erie's downtown area as a destination for adventure enthusiasts.
