LECOM Sports Park will be bustling with activity this weekend with an adult broomball and youth hockey tournament taking place at the twin-pad facility.

Participants from Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. will travel to Erie to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Broomball Tournament, hosted by the Pittsburgh Broomball Club, starting Saturday.

The Mid-Atlantic Broomball Tournament is an annual event that has taken place in Erie since November 2019. Broomball is a winter sport played on ice with rules similar to hockey that incorporates soccer strategies. It is played on a hockey rink with two teams aiming to score the most goals. Players use a stick with a molded head to maneuver a ball up and down the ice to score goals. Instead of skates, players wear spongy-soled shoes to gain traction.

“We’re thrilled to have the Mid-Atlantic Broomball Tournament back in Erie for another year,” said Tournament Director Tyler McGuigan. “It’s exciting to have athletes from across the country get together to compete. We’re looking forward to a great weekend of competition and to introduce people to the sport.”

Competition will kick off on Saturday at 9 a.m., featuring nine games throughout the day. The next round will begin on Sunday at 8 a.m., culminating in the championship game scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

In addition, the Mercyhurst Jr. Lakers Showcase will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at LECOM Sports Park. 2011 AA and 2012 AA teams will travel from Ohio, Pennsylvania and Western New York to compete in the five-game tournament.

The Showcase Series will continue this fall and winter, featuring different divisions of youth hockey for a variety of competition levels. The next tournament will take place Nov. 1-3, featuring 14U and 10U teams.
