Footbag’s premier United States event is coming to Erie for the first time. The U.S. Open Footbag Championship will take place June 9-11 at Perry Square Park in downtown Erie.
The U.S. Open Footbag Championship will feature freestyle events on the Perry Square stage and net events on courts created on the west portion of the park. Each championship will have a men’s, women’s and open division with categories for all skill levels.
“Footbag is a unique sport that we can’t wait to showcase to the Erie community,” said Anthony Ritz, co-director of this year’s event along with Dan Greer. “We have hosted footbag events in Erie in the past, but we’re excited to be bringing in some of the best footbag players in the world to Erie to compete in this year’s U.S. Open.”
A footbag is a small, round bag typically filled with sand or small plastic pellets. Freestyle competitors have a set amount of time to perform a routine that they have created to showcase their skills. Net play sees singles or doubles teams compete on a badminton-sized court with a 5-foot high net, with rules similar to volleyball and tennis.
“We always appreciate getting to work with organizers who are passionate about their sport, and we are fortunate to have Anthony and his group in Erie” said Mark Jeanneret, Executive Director of the Erie Sports Commission. “While footbag might not be the first sport that comes to mind when we talk about hosting sporting events, we’re proud to be able to welcome the best of the best for this elite competition.”
