Spikes, digs and bumps will be plentiful at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center this holiday weekend, as the 41st edition of the East Coast Volleyball Championships, featuring more than 400 youth girls volleyball teams, returns to the City of Champions May 27-29. According to SportsPITTSBURGH, a division of VisitPITTSBURGH, an estimated 12,500 visitors are expected to travel into Allegheny County, generating an estimated $6.14 million in direct visitor spend.
This is the 15th year the championship, a Memorial Day weekend staple, has taken place in Pittsburgh. Event organizers anticipate using 54 courts inside the Convention Center.
“Pittsburgh is a great fit for our event,” said East Coast Volleyball Event Director Tom Pingel. “The size of the Convention Center, the proximity of the city to so many of the teams and the welcoming atmosphere of the city all contribute to the success of the championships. The work done by SportsPITTSBURGH also contributes to the success of the championship and the appeal of conducting it in Pittsburgh. Their team works very well with our team and makes everything – pre-, during and post-event – run seamlessly.”
“The East Coast Volleyball Championship caps a very busy spring filled with the return of our annual youth events,” said SportsPITTSBURGH Executive Director Jennifer Hawkins. “We’re thrilled to see Tom and his team continue to grow this championship right here in Pittsburgh. We work hard to make sure they continue to pick Pittsburgh as their host city, and we’re looking forward to the next 15 years of this important partnership.”
Of note, East Coast Volleyball also will host a high school recruiting combine the evening of Friday, May 26, also at the Convention Center.
