Duane Parrish, Director of the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism, paid a visit to the iconic Springmaid Pier at Doubletree Resort by Hilton Myrtle Beach Oceanfront. Parrish joined resort General Manager Michael Frits as reconstruction of the South Carolina landmark recently passed the midway point. Destroyed during Hurricane Matthew, the famous 1,068-foot pier is set to reopen Memorial Day weekend, once again offering visitors, resort guests and locals the opportunity to enjoy strolling, fishing and dining along at the Atlantic shoreline. One of the longest piers on the east coast of the United States, the Springmaid Pier is also considered one of the most iconic in South Carolina and has been home to numerous fishing events and tournaments.
“We are thrilled to bring this beloved gem back to the Grand Strand,” stated Frits. “It’s a big draw for Myrtle Beach and long-time favorite for anglers. The Springmaid Pier will regain that status once again in just a few short months.”
Additional improvements will include steel reinforcements rather than timber; turtle-friendly LED lighting; new benches constructed from recycled plastics; and a NOAA weather station to help monitor wind, tides, current, temperature and salinity.
