On Feb. 27 through March 1, the Tournament of Champions baseball tournament will be held in Midland, bringing in 16 teams from Amarillo, Canyon, El Paso, Grapevine, Lubbock, and Wolfforth. Forty baseball games will be played across four Midland ballparks: Security Bank Ballpark, Christensen Stadium, Greenwood, Zachary Field, and the Ernie Johnson Field. The Tournament of Champions was established in 1975 by both the Midland High and Midland Lee booster clubs to provide a competitive event for Texas high school varsity baseball. The two schools alternate years that each directs the tournament.
Lawrence Downing is the tournament director and says the primary purpose of the tournament is to raise funds for the Midland High and Midland Lee booster clubs.
“This tournament showcases very competitive high school varsity baseball teams,” said Downing. “Attending coaches seek out this venue in order to jump start their spring season.”
