The 2019 Statesman Capitol 10,000, presented by Baylor Scott & White Health, will take place on Sunday, April 7. One dollar from each registration will go to the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM), the 2019 Statesman Cap10K beneficiary. The Statesman will donate up to $10,000 in additional participant donations.

The Cap10K is the largest 10K race in Texas and one of the top 10 in the nation. The Cap10K began in 1978 with 3,400 participants. In 2018, the race had 23,265 registered participants. Additional race information is available at Cap10K.com. More information about Richards-Ross is available at sanyarichardsross.com.

The race is pleased to announce former Olympian and Texas Longhorn Sanya Richards-Ross as race ambassador for the 42nd race on April 7, 2019. “It is a distinct honor to have Sanya Richards-Ross as our 42nd race ambassador,” said Jeff Simecek, Cap10K race director. “Not only has she accomplished so much on the track representing the University of Texas and the United States of America, but also her work off the track toward improving youth’s health, fitness and confidence, which aligns with our race’s mission.”

Richards-Ross began running competitively when she was 7 years old. Since then, she has become the world's best and most accomplished 400-meter runner and one of only two American women to ever win gold in the individual 400-meter race at the Olympics. Winning five medals at three separate Olympics, four of which are gold, five world championships, and one world indoor championship places her among the canon of greatest female athletes. Additionally, she has run the fastest sub-50 second 400-meter races of any woman ever and went undefeated for nearly two years. During this period, between 2005 and 2007, she set the U.S. record for the 400 meters.

Richards-Ross founded the Gold Standard Foundation, which seeks to improve the community through sports and education; the TeamSRR Sports Clinic; which provides free instruction to young athletes; and the Sanya Richards-Ross Fast Track Program, which helps students in Jamaica by supplementing their education with extra classes, books, and funds for improving school infrastructure, and encouraging an active lifestyle. Richards-Ross is also the author of three books. Most recently, “Right on Track: Run. Race. Believe” (2018) for teens, “Chasing Grace: What the Quarter Mile Has Taught Me About God and Life” (2017) for adults and “Run with Me: The Story of a U.S. Olympic Champion” (2017) for kids.

“Running and fitness-related philanthropic opportunities mean a great deal to me, especially when they’re close to home. I’m so pleased to be part of the Statesman Cap10K, a race that has meant so much to thousands of runners in Austin for decades. I hope my involvement will encourage runners of all abilities to come join us in 2019, especially youth runners,” said Richards-Ross.
