About Wushu
Wushu, also commonly known as Kungfu, refers to all martial art styles originating in China, includes disciplines ranging from tai chi to full contact fighting. For competition purposes, wushu has been standardized, with two categories: taolu and sanda. Taolu, or forms, are choreographed routines. There are two categories: empty-hand (without weapons) and weapons including broad sword, straight sword, staff, and spear. Sanda is full contact fighting. Fighters are paired by weight class, and matches of three rounds each are conducted on “lei tai.” Sanda athletes may employ punching, kicking, wrestling, and throwing techniques from all styles of wushu.
Wushu is popular on all five continents, and grows more popular every year. It has been included in many prestigious international multi-sport Games, including The Asian Games, The World Games, FISU University Games, The Islamic Solidarity Games, and SportAccord’s Combat Games. Wushu will be an official sport in the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, and as Olympic momentum gains speed for wushu, excitement for it is exploding especially among youth.
USAWKF
The United States of America Wushu Kungfu Federation, (USAWKF) is the official United States representative to the 158 member-nation International Wushu Federation (IWUF). The USAWKF is the first and only organization in the U.S. to successfully develop regional and national activities, and since its establishment, the USAWKF has remained dedicated to fostering the growth, development, and promotion of traditional and contemporary wushu-kungfu in the United States. Serving as the governing body for the sport within the country, the federation actively promotes and coordinates wushu-kungfu competitions and activities.
The USAWKF hosted the Third World Championship in Baltimore, Maryland in 1995, only two years after its formation. This groundbreaking event marked the first time the Championships were held outside of Asia and stood as the largest ever, attracting nearly 600 athletes and officials from fifty-four countries. The USAWKF took great pride in extending hospitality and forging connections with athletes from around the world during this historic occasion.
The International Wushu Federation

The International Wushu Federation was officially recognized by the IOC in 2002 during the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. IWUF has held official wushu tournaments as part of the IOC culture and education program in conjunction with the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and at the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games (YOG).
