The Smith River Sports Complex (SRSC) is pleased to announce its 2018 spring schedule that will bring visitors to Martinsville-Henry County beginning February 24. The spring season is highlighted by 10 events that will attract out-of-town guests to the community.
SRSC will open its spring tournament season by hosting the Commonwealth Cup College Ultimate Tournament on February 24 and 25. The sports complex will then be filled for 13 of the next 16 weekends with Easter weekend and Memorial Day weekend being the reason for two of those idle dates.
"The spring is an enjoyable and busy time of the year for SRSC," Houston Stutz, SRSC director of marketing & operations, said. "Our facility stays full with great events for everyone and is highly-regarded as a tournament destination for organizers and teams because of not only what we at SRSC have to offer, but because Martinsville is a great place to visit and the community is very welcoming."
The Bengal Bash Pre-Season High School Soccer Jamboree will kick off the busiest tournament month for the complex by occupying all five main fields on March 3. Following the Bengal Bash, ultimate will return to Martinsville for the next three weekends with the Mash-Up Women's College Ultimate Tournament on March 10 and 11, the Oak Creek Invite Men's College Tournament on March 17 and 18, and the I-85 Rodeo Women's College Ultimate Tournament on March 24 and 25.
Throughout the month of March, teams and guests will be traveling from at least 13 different states plus D.C., including as far away as Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York and Vermont. The four March events combined will bring over a 100 teams through the gates of the Smith River Sports Complex.
April will bring more opportunities for local residents and children to use the facility with three Piedmont Youth Soccer League (PYSL) recreation Saturdays, plus a local Multiple Sclerosis Society Walk on April 14. SRSC will also host two more men's and women's ultimate tournaments in April with the USA Ultimate VA/NC/SC Conference Tournament on April 14 and 15, and the USA Ultimate Atlantic Coast Regionals on April 28 and 29.
Lacrosse will take over SRSC on May 5 and 6 as the Piedmont Community Lacrosse Association will host its Lax Fest in Martinsville for the first-time ever. Soccer will complete the rest of May as the local youth will finish their PYSL season and area high schools will compete for the Piedmont District Tournament Championship on May 16 and 18. Martinsville High School will also be hosting the VHSL 2A Region C Soccer Tournament at SRSC on May 30 and June 1.
The packed spring schedule will come to a close in June with the Cardinal Cup Lacrosse Tournament on June 2 and the Delores Sullivan Kick for a Cure on June 15.
“It is so exciting to see so many new and repeat events choosing to play in Martinsville-Henry County," said Sarah Hodges, director of tourism. “It is a testament to the beautiful facility, hardworking staff and hospitable community we are fortunate to have here.”
SRSC is also the home field for the Carlisle Chiefs Girls Soccer team, Martinsville Middle School Soccer teams, Martinsville Mayhem Semi-Professional Football team and the PYSL Hurricanes Travel Soccer Program throughout the spring season.
