USA Cycling on Saturday announced the location of 2014 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships will be Richmond, Va. The announcement was made at the awards banquet in front of 400 collegiate athletes from over 100 schools competing at the 2013 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships underway in Ogden, Utah.
The event, which will also serve as a test event for the 2015 UCI Road World Championships, will be held May 2-4, 2014. The national championship courses used for the road race and time trials will also be used in the world championships in 2015. The criterium, which is not a world championship race, will be held in downtown Richmond.
"We are excited to host the 2014 USA Cycling Collegiate Nationals and have it serve as the warm-up event for be 2015 UCI Road World Championships", said Tim Miller, chief operating officer for Richmond 2015, Inc. "This event will provide an outstanding opportunity for us to test and refine our courses, logistics and processes before 2015.
"We are extremely excited to bring the 2014 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships to Richmond," USA Cycling Vice President of National Events Micah Rice said. “It will not only provide USA Cycling and the International Cycling Union (UCI) a valuable opportunity to preview the courses used at the 2015 UCI Road World Championships, but will also give the collegiate riders a challenging ride, coupled with the thrill of racing on the same roads that will test the world’s greatest cyclists in 2015.”
Richmond 2015, in conjunction with Medalist Sports, will manage the operations for the 2014 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships.
USA Cycling will announce the location for the 2015 and 2016 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships later in the year.
