The Mountain East Conference (MEC), a Division II NCAA conference, has selected the Botetourt Sports Complex as the site of its 2016 softball conference tournament. The tournament will welcome Division II college softball teams from around the region, and the winner of the tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA National Tournament. The awarding of this tournament signals Botetourt’s first direct link to the NCAA Championship Tournament, putting the Sports Complex in the national spotlight and continuing the Roanoke region’s relationship with the tournament.
“Due to a scheduling conflict, we were unable to return to Salem for 2016, but we are thrilled that another tremendous venue is available just a few miles away allowing us to continue our relationship with this region of Virginia and continue to have access to such an outstanding venue to stage a MEC Championship,” said Reid Amos, Mountain East Conference Commissioner.
Staff have worked diligently in recent years to raise the profile of the Botetourt Sports Complex. The Complex has hosted Division I regular season tournaments, Division II invitational tournaments, and the National Christian College Athletic Association World Series. The MEC championship tournament continues this tradition of hosting tournaments of national prominence.
“Hosting this tournament really takes the Sports Complex to the next level,” said Richard “Pete” Peters, Director of Parks, Recreation & Tourism. “We are extremely proud of the decade of excellence that the Complex has provided, and we look forward to how far we can go in the coming years.”
