The 50th Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Championships will be held Thursday through Sunday at Lake Wazeecha's Red Sands Beach in Wisconsin Rapids. Hosted by the Wisconsin Rapids Aqua Skiers, the tournament, billed as the world's largest water ski tournament, will feature more than 25 teams in three divisions. The tournament also features athletes competing individually in adagio doubles, swivel, freestyle jumping and team jumping acts.
In competitive show skiing, each club has one hour to present a theatrical performance on water skis. Judges score the acts by awarding points based on originality, presentation and execution. Elaborate costumes and staging intermix with music and fast action on the water as an announcer leads the audience through the show.
Among the teams competing in the Division 1 tournament will be the 2015 national champion Aquanuts (Twin Lakes, Wis.), the 2015 Wisconsin State champion Mad-City Ski Team (Madison, Wis.), and the 19-time national champion Rock Aqua Jays (Janesville, Wis.), which won the Mercury Open in June.
