The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) has announced that “Katrek and Maginnes On Tap,” one of the most popular programs on the PGA Tour Satellite Radio Network, will broadcast live Feb. 10-11, 2016, from the Golf Industry Show in San Diego. The association also will continue for the second year as a yearlong advertiser with the show to promote the superintendent profession.
The Golf Industry Show, which is held annually and directed by GCSAA, is an innovative education and trade show for owners and managers of golf facilities, including the association’s 18,000 members and the industries that market to those facilities.
“We are thrilled to have John Maginnes bring his popular radio show to San Diego and help communicate important issues within the golf management industry,” said Rhett Evans, CEO of GCSAA.
The radio show, on Sirius channel 208 and XM channel 92, is tentatively scheduled to air 5-7 p.m. (Eastern) on Feb. 10, and 6-8 p.m. on Feb. 11. Guests for Wednesday will include Evans and Herb Kohler, who is receiving GCSAA's highest honor, the Old Tom Morris Award. Thursday’s guests will include incoming GCSAA President Peter Grass, a certified golf course superintendent, and entertainer Frank Caliendo.
The program is hosted by John Maginnes, a former PGA Tour player, who spent more than 15 years playing professional golf before starting a second career as a golf announcer in 2005. He won several times on the then Nationwide Tour and had a second place finish on the PGA Tour at the 1996 B.C. Open, where he was paired with a young rookie, Tiger Woods. But before it was all done, the affable journeyman found himself at Q-School trying to regain his PGA Tour status six times. It took a toll.
“Throughout my career, I knew that if I could just get a little bit better or a little bit worse, my life would have a better chance of making sense,” he humorously writes on his website.
An elbow injury finally ended his playing career, but when he picked up a microphone to cover golf, he found a home. He got started on television for the USA Network and then the Golf Channel. He joined the PGA Tour Radio Network in 2005 and has been a fixture there ever since. His notable interview guests have included Arnold Palmer, Fred Couples, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, John Feinstein, Nancy Lopez and Tom Watson.
Maginnes has also been a contributor for Golfweek and U.S. Airways Magazine.
