The University of Charleston has announced plans to build a new sports facility. Construction is expected to start in spring of 2015.
According to an article in the Charleston Daily Mail, the $15.5 million facility will replace the Eddie King Gym, which is the oldest facility on campus, and will house locker rooms, offices and an innovation center, which the foundation donated an additional $2 million to start. The center is intended to foster innovation and entrepreneurialism on campus, according to university president Ed Welch.
The facility will be named the Russell and Martha Wehrle Innovation Center to honor the late businessman and state senator. It is part of a more than $100 million campus overhaul. The gymnasium, noted UC Athletic Director Bren Stevens, was the only facility that remained unrenovated, and was an embarrassment.
