The USA Cycling National Track Calendar (NTC) begins May 17-19 at the Superdrome in Frisco, Texas, with the Matrix Track Cup presented by Richardson Bike Mart. The calendar features a pair of UCI-inscripted CL2 events: the U.S. Grand Prix of Sprinting at the Velodrome at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs, Colo., on July 12-13 and the Los Angeles Grand Prix at the VELO Sports Center in Carson, Calif., on Oct. 25-27.
The seven-event NTC enters its second consecutive season featuring the country's best track riders. Rankings are kept for each gender in separate endurance and sprint categories. The endurance riders will compete in the points race, scratch race, individual pursuit, Madison and team pursuit. The sprinters will contest the match sprint, time trial and keirin.
"We are thrilled with the quality of events on the 2013 National Track Calendar," National Events Director Tony Leko said. "Last year's NTC created a great deal of positive buzz and we are excited to kick off 2013 with such a strong group of races, arguably the best in this country. USA Cycling is committed to encouraging the growth of American track racing and building upon what has been created through the NTC."
In 2012, USA Cycling crowned four people who topped the final NTC standings. Zachary Kovalcik (Portland, Ore./Sizzle Pie Cycling p/b Veloforma) and Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./Exergy Twenty12) topped the men’s and women’s endurance standings, respectively. On the sprint side, Giddeon Massie (Cypress, Calif./Bike Religion) and Tela Crane (Sammamish, Wash./Broadmark Capital) emerged as the nation’s best.
The Fixed Gear Classic from June 6-8 at the NSC Velodrome in Blaine, Minn., marks the calendar's second event. The following weekend, the riders will remain in the midwest to contest the $2,500 Midwest Challenge at MTV at the Major Taylor Velodrome in Indianapolis. The calendar continues two weeks later with the Hellyer Velodrome Challenge from June 28-29 at the Hellyer Velodrome in San Jose, Calif. After the U.S. Grand Prix of Sprinting in Colorado Springs, the focus shifts to the Marymoor Velodrome in Redmond, Wash., for the Marymoor Grand Prix from July 19-21 before the calendar concludes at the VELO Sports Center for the Los Angeles Grand Prix.
In addition, three American track events, which are not on the NTC, have each been inscripted by the UCI as CL3. Each of the three events will be held at The Velodrome in Trexlertown, Pa. The three events are: Festival of Speed on June 21, Fastest Man on Wheels on Aug. 16 and Madison Cup on Aug. 30.
