The following news was originally published in Adventure Sports Network:

The European Cycling Union (UEC) has announced that it will be adding a new racing circuit for electric bikes in 2019.

According to Bicycling, the UEC announced the plan last week at its annual meeting and will be called the “UEC Formula E-Bike.” UEC Formula E-Bike will include both e-road and e-mountain bikes.

The UEC, which is the federation of pro cycling governing bodies for the continent of Europe, “still needs work out the regulatory details, such as maximum speeds and what kinds of electrical assistance (pedal vs. throttle) will even be allowed.”

UEC president Rocco Cattaneo said in a press release, “We are aware that cycling is undergoing a period of radical change and our main objective must be to reach as many fans, athletes and others that we can.”

E-bike competitions do currently exist, but they are not currently sanctioned by any of the sport’s official governing bodies. So this marks a huge step in the adoption of electric bikes in the competitive arena.

Obviously it will need to be heavily regulated. Many questions are yet to be answered about the structure of how this will all come together.
