(IWAS) has launched its search for bids for the 2022 Powerchair Hockey World Championship. Those interested in hosting the next edition have been asked to send a letter of intent to IWAS by July 31, 2020.

A detailed information packet for prospective host cities can be found here.

The sport was originally known as “wheelchair hockey.” It was later referred to as “electric wheelchair hockey.” It is played only by those with wheelchairs that are propelled by a source other than human power.

IWAS has the goal of having powerchair hockey on the sport program for future Paralympic Games but requires regular regional and world tournaments in order for that to happen. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IWAS Powerchair Hockey European Championship was moved back to 2021, having originally been scheduled to take place in Finland this month. The most recent World Championship was held in 2018 in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy.

In a statement, IWAS said: "We proudly look back on a very successful IWAS Powerchair Hockey World Championship in 2018; the efforts of the Italian organizers with all the volunteers, the high-level games of all the participating nations and the enthusiasm of all of those spectators and sponsors made it a great success. Hosting the 2022 edition is an excellent opportunity for your nation to show the world the development of powerchair hockey in your nation and worldwide."

Italy currently has the reigning powerchair hockey world championship team; in 2018, Team Italy defeated Denmark 2-1 in a hard-fought final.
