Round Rock Sports Center Ready to Roll

The new Round Rock Sports Center, located at 2400 Chisholm Trail Drive, is ready to open. The $14.5 million building is a flexible indoor sports facility and will officially open its doors with a grand opening event on January 28, 2014. Built primarily with City of Round Rock Hotel Occupancy Tax, and intended to draw new tourism to the city, the new venue is already contracted for use every weekend through the end of July 2014.

The local community will get plenty of use out of the new building as well. It’s booked every Monday-Thursday throughout the spring with local club sports team practices.

The 82,800 square foot indoor sports center features six basketball courts and 12 volleyball courts with 47,775 square feet of flexible, open, playable space. It includes seating capacity for up to 1,300 spectators and 502 parking spots. Combine that with a full concession operation, referee lounge, locker rooms, a training room, LED scoreboard screens, and three large multi-purpose rooms that can be subdivided into nine smaller rooms, and the facility can handle just about any indoor sporting event Round Rock can attract. Additionally, the facility can easily convert into a space for hosting expos, meetings, speakers and concerts.

“We’re the Sports Capital of Texas and the new Round Rock Sports Center is a terrific addition to our first-class facilities that consistently attract sports tournaments from all over the state,” said Round Rock Mayor Alan McGraw. “Having a state-of-the-art indoor venue will help us continue to attract tourism dollars to our city, and it’s a really special amenity available to people that live right here in the community.”

Chad McKenzie has been named the general manager and it will employ nine full-time City of Round Rock employees in addition to 50-60 part-time employees for events. Nancy Yawn, Director of the Round Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau, oversees tournament and event sales. The architect was Marmon Mok and Chasco built the facility.

We came in on time and on budget and we’re opening the doors with a full schedule of events already booked and bringing new tourist dollars into our community,” said Round Rock City Manager Steve Norwood. “This new venue is an investment the people of Round Rock can be proud of.”
