The Olympics are in full swing and the Meijer State Games of Michigan’s inaugural Winter Games are almost here. The Winter Games are taking place Feb. 14–16, and will feature 12 different sports taking place in West Michigan with 1,500 athletes expected to participate. The schedule of events is finalized and the Meijer State Games are ready to bring the Olympic Winter Games experience to Michigan.
“The Meijer State Games of Michigan evokes such a strong sense of community and state pride in its participants, as well as the thousands of spectators who attend,” Meijer Co-Chairman Doug Meijer said. “We are excited to see this summer tradition hold true during the inaugural Winter Games.”
“The Meijer State Games of Michigan is a signature event of the West Michigan Sports Commission,” said Mike Guswiler, president of the West Michigan Sports Commission. “It is our mission to bring youth and amateur athletes into our community and create an economic impact through visitor spending. The inaugural Winter Games will accomplish this goal starting on Friday.”
To kick off the inaugural Meijer State Games of Michigan Winter Games, Opening Ceremonies will be held at Cannonsburg Ski & Ride Area, 6800 Cannonsburg Road N.E., Belmont, Mich. 49306, from 7-8 p.m. Feb. 14. The free Opening Ceremonies festivities will include a torch light parade from the ski patrol, fireworks, and a big air exhibition with professional skiers and snowboarders. Athlete check-in will be from 4-6 p.m. The first 500 athletes to attend Opening Ceremonies will receive a commemorative credential, Meijer giveaway, Metro Health giveaway, and local restaurant incentives.
