The women’s team representing Team USA at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Masters World Team Championships finished runner-up to Germany by a score of 2-0 in the Alice Marble Cup (women’s 60 & over). The American teams also had two third place finishes in the Austria Cup (men’s 55 & over) and the Maureen Connolly Cup (women’s 55 & over). The U.S. contingent at the Vonn Cramm Cup (men’s 60 & over) placed sixth.
The tournament is the masters equivalent of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competitions, with top tennis players representing their country in the 55- and 60-and-over age groups. The ITF Masters World Team Championships is the most prestigious team event on the ITF Masters circuit.
The Americans also claimed two individual titles at the ITF Masters 55+ and 60+ World Individual Championships the following week. Austria Cup team captain Eoin Collins from Houston claimed the title of world champion in the men’s 55 & over masters championship when he defeated Bart Theelen from the Netherlands by a score of 6-2, 6-3.
The American women’s doubles duo from Dallas of Vicki Buholz and Gayle Prejean prevailed in a one-sided final 6-2, 6-0, over Gabriela Silvia Vilar Pereira (Spain) and Marcela Voyame (Argentina) to become the world champions in the Women’s 60+ Doubles Masters Championship.
